MotherboardProcessorRAMPower supply → power
The motherboard connects the processor and RAM. The power supply provides electrical power.

The case and motherboard

The case protects the parts inside a computer. The motherboard is the main board that connects parts so they can work together. The case and the motherboard are different things.

The processor and RAM

The processor, or CPU, carries out instructions and processes data. RAM is working memory for data and programs the computer is currently using. RAM holds data temporarily and loses it when power is removed.

Power and saved work

The power supply provides the electrical power the computer parts need. When you save a drawing, it is kept on a storage device, such as an SSD. That is why a saved drawing can remain after shutdown. Learn the parts from the picture without opening the case.

Try it yourself

Explain in your own words: which part connects, which processes, and which holds data temporarily?

See an example answer

The motherboard connects parts. The processor processes data. RAM temporarily holds what the computer is using.

1. Which part processes data?
2. What connects computer parts?
3. RAM holds data:
4. Which part supplies the electrical power needed?
5. Where do we save a drawing so it remains after shutdown?

Answer key
  1. Processor. The processor carries out instructions and processes data.
  2. Motherboard. The motherboard connects the parts.
  3. Temporarily while powered. RAM loses its data when power is removed.
  4. Power supply. The power supply powers the computer parts.
  5. On a storage device such as an SSD. A storage device retains saved data without power.
